Power Surge Protection

Power surges are unpredictable and can have multiple causes like sudden voltage fluctuations on a circuit, faulty appliances, storms, or supply faults from the electricity supplier. As electronic wiring is steadily getting more complicated, even slight power surges in such electrical systems can cause major damage that could sometimes be irreparable.

Often power surges are a result of an interruption in the flow of power, then established again or directing power back into the infrastructure, like by lightning. Though we attribute lightning as the main cause of the majority of power surges, it merely accounts for approximately 2% of these cases. How do surge protectors work?

The live wire or main power line at a surge protector contains an additional linked connection that feeds into an earth wire. An earth wire’s purpose is to direct any extra current safely to the ground. The surge connection from the protector stays inactive until a bigger than normal voltage appears. This extra current is then securely redirected through the extra earth cable, right into the ground. This prevents more current than ordinary from flowing into your appliances efficiently ensuring they are protected from any injury which can result from power surges.
